17 Months and Growing!

Happy 17 Months to my baby boy!  He is growing up too fast, but at the same time, part of me feels like he is not growing up fast enough.  M is concerned that he is behind in his speech development (he doesn't say much other than mama, dada, ball, though he understands perfectly what we tell him).  I'm not as worried, but if he doesn't progress any further by his 18-month checkup, we'll have him evaluated for early intervention.

Baby M came down with an ear infection back in February.  We took him to the doctor, he was prescribed a 10-day treatment of antibiotics (amoxicillin), and his ears were clear at his follow-up appointment two weeks later.  Then in late March, he came down with a fever and woke up in the middle of the night crying inconsolably (M and I took turns taking him for a car ride at 3 in the morning).  We brought him back to the doctor and was told he had some fluid in his ears, which could have been causing him pain.  The doctor again prescribed some antibiotics for him (this time augmentin).  I took him back to have his ears re-checked earlier this week and the doctor said the fluid was still in his ears.  The augmentin apparently did nothing other than give him a bad case of diarrhea and diaper rash.  He was prescribed still a third type of antibiotics (omnicef) and the doctor said that if this doesn't clear it up, he will need to see an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) specialist.  Baby M has been waking up in the middle of the night for the past two months now... sometimes he is willing to go back to sleep fairly quickly, other times he stays up for a few hours.  Since February, I think there have been less than five nights where he was able to sleep all the way through.  I don't know if it's because he's sick, teething, or if by now he's just gotten into the habit of waking up.  Either way, it's been exhausting.  I pray the medicine will do its job and he'll be given a clean bill of health when we go back yet again to get his ears checked in two weeks.

Here's my little boy "helping" with the laundry:
